Unlike
last year's "anti-June Gloom"
feature, this time around we're going to
be supportive of the month of clouds and
gray. After all, summer starts in June and
that's reason enough to celebrate. As reliable
as the gloomy weather patterns are each
year, the month of June is also surprisingly
sprinkled with moments of brilliant sunshine.
In this feature we're showcasing a little
bit of both. Some shots have sun while others
have nothing but gray, just like the month
itself. Click

Beach's Sara Taylor, a few thousand dollars richer after
her VQS finish, kicks off the month of June with a massive
backhand smash.
2. On this dreary yet oddly warm morning, Kyla Langen
pauses for a stretch before paddling out for some cold
ones.
3. On this late afternoon, Kelly Nicely combines spray
paint with nature's own palette of color.
4. Florida's Amy Nicholl in a perfect example of June
Gloom. The solution? Throw on a red wetsuit and lay
into some colorful turns.
5. At a spot that rarely works, Kenzie Kessler pushes
her boundaries.
6. How many of you had math professors in college who
could lean into a big frontside hack? Dr. Amber Puha
enjoying the freedom that summer vacation brings.
7. You don't have to look at the latest World Tour rankings
to locate a surfing champion. Oftentimes, they're paddling
right next to you. Danielle Burt.
8. Kaitlin Maguire cutting back after dark. When I think
of Kaitlin's surfing, I think of pure power ...but she
also surfs with amazing style and grace.
9. In an era of higher and higher altitudes, the area
below the lip often gets ignored. However, those who
know its magic use it frequently. Diane Mattison, flying.
10. When your spray shoots up instead of out, you know
it's a crisply placed turn. Karina Petroni chooses to
whip a clean hook off the whitewater.
11. How is it possible to hold an edge, to hit the lip,
to paddle even? Kassia Meador, one of the few surfers
who know the magic of sliding an alaia.
12. There's nothing better than finding some A-frames
at your local beach. Jenny Quam loving life at home.
13. Lulu Erkeneff in very typical June gloom conditions
hits one off the top and eyes the wall lining up in
front of her. Cloudy but fun in South Orange County.
14. While filming for an upcoming project, Pandora Decoster
brought French style and footwork to a surprisingly
sunny day at one of SD's best longboard spots.
15. You don't actually have to be physically large to
throw down a big turn. Tiny grom, Meah Collins, lays
into a fun right and lights up an otherwise gray day.
16. For a full appreciation of Ashley Lloyd's surfing,
you must see it live or on video. Her intricate use
of footwork and the switchstance roundhouse is beautiful.
17. The heart on her board points to the recent loss
of her brother. Surfing with purpose and love, Alexa
Frantz blasts the lip and points her board toward heaven.
18. With a beautiful wall lining up in front of her,
a local surfer enjoys some glassy solitude before school
gets out for the summer.
19. Nage' Melamed throws an arc on a little, midday
right that will allow a half-dozen similar turns. Nage'
is a powerful young surfer with a very bright future.
20. Huntington Beach's Jenna Balester takes the short
trip to Newport and scores some fun, onshore rights.
Power is a trademark of Jenna's backhand surfing.
21. Chelsea Williams in a "guess-what-she-did-next?"
photo. Did she torque it into a vertical blast or unweight
into a backside boardslide?
22. Not big fans of SUP, but we're huge fans of these
two. On a tiny day when even longboarding was difficult,
Prue Jeffries and Linda Benson go for a paddle.
23. We've frankly never seen a surfer with better technical
ability than Courtney Conlogue.
24. We're still partial to spray-throwers like Carpinteria's
Bo Stanley. If you paddle out when she whips a frontside
snap, you're going to get soaked.
25. This spring we finally caught up with 2004 World
Champ, Summer Romero. She hasn't missed a step. Effortless
style in North San Diego County.
26. If there was ever a longboard/shortboard combo tour,
Kelia Moniz would surely find herself in competition
for the title. She rips at both!
27. Laguna Beach's Taylor Pitz has an amazing frontside
snap. Even on an average at her local spot, her energetic
hacks turn heads in the lineup.
28. Some of Lakey Peterson's turns bear a remarkable
resemblance to another Santa Barbara icon, Tom Curren.
